!NOTES:
NSCDA: The Dalton family Bible belonged to Catherine Dalton, and was destroyed
in the Civil War. This Bible carried the Dalton pedigree back to a branch of
the Sir John Dalton family of England. The Hon.William L. Yancey, grandson of
Catherine, was familiar with the bible. Research by other family members
confirmed the bible pedigree and show that John Dalton, the first in America,
was of the family of Daltons of York County England. An older line of Daltons
had become extinct during the life of John Dalton the colonist.
The head of the Daltons of Hanxwell, County York, was Colonel John Dalton,
fifth in descent from John Dalto, who settled at Kingston-upon-Hull in 1458,
and was a son of Sir William, knighted in 1629 died in 1649 buried in York
Minster. Colonel John Dalton married Honerable Dorothy, daughter of Sir Conyers
Darcy (Lord Darcy). Colonel John Dalton served under Lord Darcy. He was wounded
5 July 1643 while conducting Queen Henrietta Maria from Bridlington to Oxford.
He died of his wounds July 1644, buried at York Minster. The elder lise of his
descendants became extinct in 1792, when his great grandson Francis, died and
the title reverted to a descendant of a younger son of Colonel John Dalton.
