John was partner in the firm of Carlyle and Dalton. Homes are landmarks in
Alexandria Va.
NSCDA: Gives information on this John Dalton as having been born in 1722, died
in Alexandria Virginia in 1777. He had removed to Belhaven in 1755 and was one
of the founders, and one of the first trustees of that town. He was a vestryman
of "Old Christ Church", along with George Washington, John Shaw and Thomas
Carlyle. Thomas Carlyle was his business partner, who became the guardian of
his two daughters after his death. Thomas Carlyle and the Dalton daughters
lived at the Braddock House. John Dalton's home became the "Home for Aged Men".
He was a member of the Committee of Correspondence for Alexandria in 1775. He
married December 1749, Jemima, daughter of Thomas and Jane Shaw.
