Will of Robert Dalton, 28 Jan 1779, Virginia.
On 1850 census. Mary was living with her daughter and son in law, Ransom &
Martha Hunt.
From 'Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files'; pg 867; Mary Polly Terry
Dalton applied for pension agains war record of husband "George" Dalton,
application dated 29 Oct 1849, Pickens District, South Carolina, No. R-2635.
Polly was 84 years old at that time.
From a copy of Mary Polly Dalton pension application:
Solomon was drafted, as a private, into the Revolutionary Army for six months,
while living in Pittsylvania Co. Va. She thinks he served with Capt. Williams
Company, and was under Gen. Green at Cambridge. Solomons discharge papers were
thought valueless and not cared for, and since she could not read, was not sure
who signed the papers. She married Solomon in Pittsylvania Co. Va, in the
winter of 1782 or 1783 by Nathan Thurmond, Baptist Minister. They lived in
Virginia until they had four children then moved to Golden Grove in Greenville
District, South Caroline. She had a family record made by Robert Tarrant but
did not know its location. Solomon died 20 Nov 1845, born in 1760.
Mary's application was denied due to lack of evidence that Solomon served in
the Revolution. However, years later Solomon's name was found on the Oath of
Allegiance dated 2 Aug 1777 and signed by William Witcher 26 Dec 1777, in
Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.
