Sergeant but was reduced to the rank of Corporal in Sep, 1861-Feb, 1863.
Present or accounted for until captured by the enemy in an unspecified battle.
Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, Sep 7, 1862. Reported
absent without leave from Nov 11, 1862 through 31 Aug 1863. Reduced to ranks
prior to 1 Sep 1863. Company records do not indicate whether he returned to
duty, however, he deserted to the enemy on an unspecified date prior to Mar 3,
1865, when he took the Oath of Allegiance at Knoxville, Tennessee.
Co. B, 14th Regiment, North Carolina Troops; Sergeant - place and date of
enlistment not reported. Deserted to enemy prior to 3 March, 1865, when he was
confined at Knoxville, Tennessee. Released 4 March, 1865 after taking Oath of
Allegiance.
Wm. wife is famous for walking from Cleveland, North Carolina to Knoxville, Tn.
to the prison camp to plead for her husband's release. She took several of her
children and one child died during the trip.
